SCPA Strengthens Sustainability Commitment with Greencycle Partnership

5 / 3 / 2024

MANILA, Philippines – Sanitary Care Products Asia, Inc. (SCPA) announces a strategic partnership with Greencycle Innovation Corporation (GIC) to champion sustainability and address plastic pollution in the Philippines. This collaboration goes beyond mere compliance with the Expanded Producer Responsibility Law (EPR) of 2022, reflecting SCPA’s deep commitment to environmental stewardship.

SCPA selected GIC to be its Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) due to the latter’s expertise in effective waste management, recycling programs, and treatment of single-use plastic.

Understanding the EPR Law

The DENR’s Expanded Producer Responsibility Law, otherwise known as EPR, requires producers (brands and other enterprises) to be more responsible for their waste products. This covers large enterprises, defined as companies with total assets over P1 billion to recover their portion of plastic packaging waste.

The law is meant to address the Philippines’ contribution to the global plastic pollution problem. By 2050, it is expected that the global waste will grow to 3.04 billion tons; in the Philippines, the country generates 61,000 million metric tons of waste, which is a huge contribution to the world’s growing waste statistics.

According to Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, the PH also produces 163 million plastic sachets, 45 million thin-film bags, and 48 million shopping bags – most of which are produced by the country’s biggest brands. For this reason, the DENR enacted the EPR Act to hold companies accountable for the plastic packaging they produce throughout the lifecycle of their products.

SCPA’s Partnership with Greencycle

Product Development Manager Jerivic Delos Angeles signs on behalf of SCPA President Ven Sio.

SCPA recognizes its role in minimizing its environmental impact and contributing to a cleaner future.

To promote sustainability, it adopted Greencycle’s co-processing and upcycling programs. With co-processing, Greencycle helps the company collect plastics and co-process them into cement. GIC is partners with numerous cement manufacturers in the Philippines that can help convert the waste into cement. On the other hand, upcycling converts rigid plastic into flakes, which produce plastic sacks for packaging sand products.

This way, all waste will not go to waste; instead, these will be repurposed into essential building materials.

Aligning with Existing Green Initiatives

This partnership with GIC strengthens SCPA’s existing sustainability efforts. They have a proven track record of environmental responsibility, including the production of eco-friendly paper products like Sanicare Ecolayers Bathroom Tissue, a 3-ply tissue composed of two sheets of 100% virgin pulp tissue with a sheet of recycled paper in between. Furthermore, their collaboration with the Haribon Foundation demonstrates their commitment to environmental conservation through reforestation projects.

Building a Sustainable Future, Together

By working with GIC, SCPA takes a proactive stance in tackling plastic pollution and promoting responsible waste management practices. This collaboration contributes to a cleaner environment for future generations.
