SCPA Plants Seeds of Hope this Earth Day by Honoring Its Legacy of “Great Love”

5 / 5 / 2025

TAGUIG, METRO MANILA – A few days after the global observance of Earth Day, SCPA gathered its employees for a deeply meaningful internal event last April 25, 2025 to reflect on the company’s enduring commitment to environmental and social responsibility—anchored not in trend or obligation, but in a timeless company mantra: Great Love.

Held at the TLC Training Hall, the event was the brainchild of SCPA President Ven Sio and the company’s ESG team, following a series of articles circulated internally to raise awareness about SCPA’s ongoing ESG initiatives. But more than reports and metrics, the heart of the gathering was a message: long before ESG became a framework, Great Love was already at work at SCPA.

ADDRESSING THE REALITY OF CLIMATE CHANGE

In his keynote, Ven addressed the real and urgent threat of climate change, noting its disproportionate risk to the Philippines. With 64 coastal provinces, 25 major coastal cities, 822 municipalities, and 13.6 million Filipinos at risk, and national temperatures expected to rise between 0.9°C and 2.2°C by 2050, the danger is real—but so is the power of action.

Bjorn Lomborg’s take on climate change plays a big influence on SCPA’s view of making positive changes that will impact the people. community, and the planet.

Rather than cultivating despair, the President of SCPA encouraged the team to respond with responsibility, purpose, and yes, hope—drawing inspiration from Bjorn Lomborg’s thought-provoking video, “An Inconvenient Truth: Our climate policies can’t save the environment. So what will?”

Instead of succumbing to the collective “gloom and doom” mindset, he encourages the team to practice Great Love to people and things within their spheres of control.

A LEGACY OF RESPONSIBLE ACTION

Team SCPA learns more about the company’s current efforts at sharing Great Love to more people.

Despite being a paper company, SCPA has taken bold steps to reduce its environmental footprint. Some of these include:

  • Since 2014, the company has partnered with Haribon Foundation, planting over 14,000 native tree seedlings with an impressive 98% survival rate.
  • Suppliers like Asia Pulp and Paper in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, are chosen for their commitment to reforestation programs.
  • The use of mixed-grade and brown paper allows the company to reduce waste and serve eco-conscious clients.
  • Bail trims are sold to recycling companies, turning potential waste into additional revenue.

SCPA’s green efforts also extend to its energy use. With solar power investments, the company has:

  • Saved an estimated 158,714 trees
  • Avoided 2,947 tons of carbon emissions
  • Exported 1,152,791 kWh of clean energy back to the grid
  • Cut energy costs by Php 39.7 million

GREAT LOVE FOR ITS PEOPLE AND NEARBY COMMUNITIES

Environmental sustainability is just one part of SCPA’s greater mission. Through the SCPA Employee Savings and Loan Association, Inc. (SESLAI), the company supports the financial well-being of its people with:

  • Php 49.5 million in capital contributions
  • 5%–10% dividend rates annually
  • Php 3.8 million in average annual loan disbursements
  • 80% loan approval rate among 489 enrolled employees

Beyond financial wellness, SCPA is also deeply invested in Filipino families. Recognizing that strong families build strong communities, the company offers:

  • Parenting seminars, including breastfeeding education and fatherhood training
  • Mass weddings, helping couples formalize their union and secure legal foundations for their families

A SYMBOLIC SEND-OFF

An employee “plants” her pledge on SCPA’s Earth Day tree.

Before the program closed, each person paused to write a personal commitment on a paper leaf. As the tree filled up with leaves, it became a powerful visual of our collective promise to do better, live with purpose, and love more deeply.

They were then sent off with plantable pencils—small reminders that real change starts when we plant seeds of hope.

This year’s Earth Day celebration was more than just a corporate event. It was a quiet but powerful reminder that true sustainability starts from within—in the values we live by, the choices we make, and the love we share every day.
