SCPA shifts facilities to solar energy

Filipinos are growing more conscious about the environment. With the country bearing the brunt of the effects of climate change, many Pinoys have become cognizant of the importance of ecological sustainability.

One of the primary advocates of sustainable business practices here in the Philippines is Sanitary Care Products Asia (SCPA) known for their brand of hygiene products like Tisyu, Sanicare and Naturale.

This year, SCPA doubles down on its commitment to the environment by shifting to solar power for their converting facility in Mabalacat, Pampanga.

“SCPA’s decision to transition to solar is primarily motivated by our commitment to environmentally-friendly practices. But it also makes economic sense for us, especially now that solar panels are relatively cheaper and much more durable than a few years ago. With solar power, we know we will reliably deliver savings over a large period of time,” Ven Sio, SCPA president said.

SCPA is known as a Filipino company specializing in paper and household and hygiene product innovations created through environmentally sustainable processes. The company uses 100 percent virgin pulp in its paper products, which it offsets by planting more trees in an environmentally certified tree farm.

“Our plan is to make these efforts meaningful. We want to live this by pursuing sustainable practices in our own offices and plants. On our 20th year, we hope to create a best-practice standard for living and working green,” Pacis said.

The solar panels were installed by German grid technology developer PV2 Energie. The photovoltaic system will run most of the machinery in the Mabalacat facility and is expected to produce 120,000 kWh, enough to power more than 600 households with an average consumption of 200 kWh per month.

Sio said they expect the system to last for about 20 years and it will be able to pay for itself in as short as five to six years.
Sio said SCPA hopes to see more and more businesses shifting to renewable sources of energy as it becomes more viable economically.

“Going green is a sustainable business decision that helps both the environment as well as our bottom line. It will ensure that our children, and their children, continue to enjoy the world we live in and the resources it offers,” Sio added.
