TAGUIG, METRO MANILA – Sanitary Care Products Asia, Inc. (SCPA), a Strengths-based company committed to driving individual and team performance, successfully held its third annual Strengths Day last February 7, reinforcing its dedication to employee growth and well-being.
With the theme Maximize Strengths for Self-Regulation and Mindful Performance, this year’s event focused on the importance of self-regulation in harnessing personal and professional strengths effectively.
A Strengths-Based Tradition
Over the last two years, SCPA has been deepening its understanding of Strengths. They started by discovering their individual Strengths, and then explored how those talents influenced their work and lives.
This year, the team focused on two important elements for maximizing potential: self-regulation and self-care. Previously, Team SCPA learned what their Strengths are and their impact; now, they’re exploring how this impact them because simply knowing our strengths is not enough. If we’re not mindful, even our greatest Strength can drain us.
“Knowing is not enough,” hosts Eden Mae Urbiztondo and Jarem Palomata emphasized. “It’s essential to regulate and balance Strengths to prevent overuse or underuse. Proper self-management leads to improved well-being and sustainable performance.”
Self-regulation empowers us to manage our Strengths wisely, maintaining motivation and preventing burnout, so we can truly thrive. And self-care is essential to that balance, ensuring we have the well-being to stay in control.
Insightful Keynote by Dr. Rhalf Jayson “RJ” Guanco
The highlight of the event was a thought-provoking talk by Dr. Rhalf Jayson “RJ” Guanco, PhD, RPsy, RPm, a renowned Clinical Neuropsychologist and Psychometrician. Dr. Guanco, the first Filipino psychologist to receive the prestigious American Psychological Association (APA) Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Independent Practice, shared valuable insights on self-regulation.
Dr. Guanco led a workshop focused on optimizing brain performance through self-regulation, using the framework ACT, PEAK, BOOST, and MAP. His presentation highlighted the following key points:
- Brain Plasticity (ACT: Awareness, Control, Transformation): Dr. Guanco emphasized the brain’s continuous malleability through experience and learning, a concept known as neuroplasticity. This underscores the potential for personal growth and development. Key takeaway: The brain is not static; it constantly adapts.
- Impact of Self-Regulation (PEAK: Proactively Empowering Adaptive Knowledge): He explained the consequences of lacking self-regulation and helped participants identify their individual emotional triggers, associated physical manifestations, and the impact these have. Key takeaway: Understanding your emotional and physical responses is crucial for self-regulation.
- Strengths-Based Self-Regulation (BOOST: Brain Optimized Outcomes through Strategic Techniques): Dr. Guanco introduced practical, strengths-based techniques to promote self-regulation. He categorized these techniques by Strengths domains, providing tailored self-care strategies:
- Relationship Building: Reframing challenges by considering others’ perspectives and seeking support from colleagues. Key takeaway: Leverage your interpersonal skills for emotional support and perspective.
- Influencing: Coping by focusing on making an impact and reflecting on future goals. Key takeaway: Channel your drive and ambition into positive coping mechanisms.
- Strategic Thinking: Stepping back for reflection and taking breaks for processing (journaling, mindfulness, meditation, Bible reading). Key takeaway: Prioritize reflection and mental breaks for clarity and stress reduction.
- Executing: Seeking accomplishment through exercise, completing tasks, and prioritizing sleep. Key takeaway: Use action-oriented approaches to manage stress and achieve a sense of control.
- Actionable Self-Care Plan (MAP: Mapping out Actionable Pathways): The workshop concluded with participants creating personalized action plans. They identified which of their Strengths they would utilize to practice self-care and self-regulation for improved performance in 2025. Key takeaway: Translating knowledge into personalized action is essential for lasting change.
Dr. Guanco’s workshop provided valuable insights into brain behavior and practical strategies for self-regulation. By focusing on awareness, understanding, and leveraging individual strengths, participants were empowered to take control of their emotional and mental well-being for enhanced performance.
“Understand which coping strategies tend to be effective and which do not. Ensure they align with your strengths,” he advised.
A Holistic Approach to Employee Well-Being
Led by SCPA’s HR team, the event also emphasized health and wellness beyond mental strategies. Employees received healthy snacks and essential oils, reinforcing SCPA’s commitment to holistic well-being.
As SCPA continues to cultivate a Strengths-based culture, Strengths Day remains a cornerstone in equipping employees with tools to maximize their potential, regulate their strengths, and sustain mindful performance.
